About FnLocal
This part of Queensland is known as the Far North. That’s where the acronym “fn” comes from. And yes, if you say it right it also sounds like an expletive that is commonly heard around these parts, perhaps more so than in any other part of the world.
FnLocal is a new project of mine. I have only a vague idea what it’s about and the following ramble describes how it all started. I’m Debbie, artist/designer/teacher/greenie/geek, and I live in Mena Creek. My last project was Cassowary Connect, an events diary that has been online since early 2008 and runs well on its own now. But, despite my initial hopes, it was not a huge financial success. Or even a small financial success.
Middle of 2009 I was ready for a new project. I had been thinking of writing reviews of local restaurants for a while. I’m not a “foodie” but some of the lovely fnLocals I dine with are. While testing out Wordpress blogging software I thought long and hard (20 minutes) for a name. I think domain names should ideally be as short as possible and ideally two syllables (like goo/gle, twi/tter, face/book) not six (like cass/o/wa/ry co/nnect), unless you come up with a memorable gimmick (like mill/ion/do/llar/home/page.com or where/the/hell/is/matt/.com). I was stunned when my first google (.com.au) search of FnLocal brought up no results. Usually when I google my silly ideas I find that someone’s thought of it long before me. Here’s a tip, the same thing applies with any problem you might have – I’ve found that someone out there in the world has had the same problem and has posted up a solution.
FnLocal – f/n/lo/cal – mmm… four syllables – will it be a success? Will it be a financial success? Probably not, considering the fact that the site doesn’t actually sell anything. After years of denial I’ve come to accept that I’m an artist, and most of us are famously crap at making money. I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m going to print that on a shirt and wear it.
FnLocal – it seems to be the right word to describe many Far North Locals, myself included. It fits with the typical Australian self-depreciating humour and it can be interpreted/used in a number of ways. No I’m not going to list the ways. Use your imagination. Anyway, it’s got to be better than Real/True Local don’t you think?
So, are you fn’ local?
I am.
I have a Tshirt that says so.
:o)
